In this guide

This guide takes a new Newland MT93 Megattera from the box to its first scan: cards and battery, the first charge, switching on, Wi-Fi, a scan test and system updates. The steps are the same for the Standard Plus and the Pro, because Newland covers the whole MT93 series in one user guide.

    You'll need
    • The MT93 with its battery, USB-C cable and multiplug power adapter (all in the box)
    • Optional: a nano SIM card for 4G mobile data
    • Optional: a microSD card (up to 256 GB)
    • Your Wi-Fi network name and password
    • About 6 hours for the first charge

    Before you start

    Check the box

Newland lists these items in the box for both models: the MT93, a protective case, a USB-C cable, the battery, a screen protector, a hand strap and a multiplug adapter. Check everything for transport damage and contact us if anything is missing. Charging cradles, spare batteries, the 4-slot battery charger and pistol grips are sold separately.

    Know the keys

The MT93 has five physical keys. The volume keys and the left scan key are on the left side, the power key and the right scan key on the right side. Menu, Home and Back are on-screen keys. Every physical key except the power key can be reprogrammed.

    Standard Plus or Pro?

The setup is identical. The only setup difference is the card slot: the Standard Plus takes two nano SIM cards, or one nano SIM and a microSD card. The Pro takes one nano SIM and a microSD card and also has a built-in eSIM. See MT93 Standard Plus vs Pro for all differences.

Insert the SIM and microSD card

Both cards are optional. The card tray sits under the battery cover. Fit the cards with the MT93 switched off.

    1. Slide the battery cover latch on the back to the unlock position and lift off the cover.
    2. Pull the card tray out of the card slot.
    3. Place the nano SIM card in the tray. On the Standard Plus, use the second position for a second nano SIM or for a microSD card.
    4. Push the tray gently all the way back into the slot until it locks.
    Note

The MT93 accepts only nano SIM cards (12.3 × 8.8 mm). Standard and micro SIM cards don't fit. For the eSIM on the Pro, ask your mobile operator for the activation details.

    Insert the battery

    1. With the battery cover removed, insert the battery with its metal contacts facing down, lined up with the contacts inside the battery compartment.
    2. Refit the battery cover and close the latch.

To remove the battery later, switch the MT93 off first: hold Power for about five seconds and tap Power off. Then unlock the cover and lift the battery out. Use only Newland batteries and power adapters.

    Charge the battery

Connect the MT93 to a wall outlet with the USB-C cable and the multiplug adapter from the box, or place it in an MT93 charging cradle. Newland asks you to charge the battery for at least 6 hours before first use. After that, a battery below 5 % takes about 3 hours to charge fully, with the MT93 switched off or in sleep mode.

    LED Meaning
    Red, steady Charging
Green, steady Fully charged. Newland's quick start guide shows green; the user guide says blue.
Red, flashing Battery low. Charge the device.
Blue, flashing Incoming call or message
    • Charge only above 0 °C. Below that, the MT93 stops charging to protect the battery. For the longest battery life, Newland recommends charging between 0 and 30 °C in a ventilated place.
    • If the battery was completely empty, charge for 15 minutes before you press Power.
    • MT93 charging cradles can be linked into a set of up to four. A linked set needs a 19 V, 3.2 A power adapter, sold separately.

Switch on and finish the setup

    1. Hold Power on the right side until the Android logo appears. The first start takes a little while.
    2. Follow the Android setup screens for language, network and Google account. The MT93 Standard Plus and Pro ship with Android 13 and Google Mobile Services (GMS).
    3. Set a screen lock under Settings › Security › Screen lock if the device holds company data.

A short press of Power locks the screen and puts the MT93 to sleep. To restart, hold Power until the menu appears and tap Restart. To switch off, tap Power off in the same menu.

    Tip

Managing several devices? Newland's free Ndevor management software enrols devices by QR code and pushes apps, settings and updates. Ask your IT team before you complete the setup screens if the MT93 should be enrolled.

    Connect to Wi-Fi

    1. Open Settings › Network & Internet › Internet and switch Wi-Fi on.
    2. Tap your network, enter the password and tap Connect.
    3. For a hidden network, tap Add network, enter the network name, choose the security type and the password, then tap Save.

The MT93 supports Wi-Fi 6E on 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz. Newland lists Enhanced Open, WEP, WPA/WPA2-Personal, WPA3-Personal, WPA/WPA2/WPA3-Enterprise and WPA3-Enterprise 192-bit. Under Advanced options you can set a proxy and choose DHCP or a static IP address.

    Mobile data (optional)

With a SIM fitted, switch on mobile data in the quick settings panel or under Settings › Network & Internet › Mobile network. If there is no connection, check the access point name under Mobile network › Advanced › Access Point Names with your operator's settings.

    Test the scanner

    1. Open an app with a text field, for example a notes app, and tap the field.
    2. Point the scan window on the top of the MT93 at a barcode.
    3. Press and hold the left or right scan key. For a 1D barcode, the laser line should be about 8 mm longer than the barcode.
    4. On a good read the data appears in the field. Depending on the Good Read Indicator setting, the MT93 also beeps, vibrates or flashes the LED blue once.

You can also test in the Newland Scan Demo app (SCAN demo). To add Enter after each scan, change the output mode or turn barcode types on and off, see the MT93 scanner settings guide.

    Keep the MT93 updated

Open the System Update app and tap CHECK FOR UPDATES. In the menu at the top right of that screen, under Settings, you can set how often it checks, limit downloads to Wi-Fi and download new versions automatically on Wi-Fi.

    • Newland aims to deliver firmware and security updates quarterly for the latest firmware version.
    • Newland's Android roadmap lists Android 15 as a released upgrade for both the Standard Plus and the Pro, with security patches until 29 February 2028. Menu names in this guide are from the Android 13 user guide and can differ slightly after the upgrade.
    • A local update from a zip file is also possible: copy it to the device or a microSD card, open System Update, tap the menu at the top right and choose Local Update. Use only update files from Newland; third-party system software voids the warranty.

Manuals and downloads are on Newland's MT93 Standard Plus and MT93 Pro product pages. If something goes wrong, see MT93 troubleshooting or all MT93 guides.
