Newland FM3281 troubleshooting: lights, no read, no output
What the FM3281 logo and NFC lights mean, and how to fix a scanner that does not read, does not type, types wrong characters or needs a reset.
In this guide
The FM3281 tells you most of what is wrong with the colour of the light by its logo, and on the NFC version with a second NFC light. Bar code names below are quoted exactly as in the FM3281 User Guide. Remember that programming bar codes only work after you scan Enter Setup, and finish with Exit Setup.

Fixes
1. No sign of lifeNo beep, no light
CauseThe scanner is powered over USB. Often the extension cable is not fully seated on the scanner cable.
Fix
- Unplug the USB end from the PC first. Newland warns that connecting or disconnecting the scanner cable while powered can damage it.
- Check that the extension cable sits firmly on the scanner's interface connector.
- Wait a few seconds, then plug the USB end into another USB port on the PC.
- Listen for the power-on beep, then test a scan.
2. Purple light, nothing readsLogo light purple
CauseNewland uses purple when all bar code types are disabled, when reading was switched off by the Read Barcode Off command, when a firmware update failed, or when there is a configuration error.
Fix
- Unplug the scanner and plug it back in. This switches reading back on after a Read Barcode Off command.
- Scan Enter Setup, Enable All Symbologies (chapter 9, "Global Settings") and Exit Setup.
- If it stays purple, restore the factory defaults (Fix 9).
- After a failed update, repeat it with Newland's EasySet.
3. Red lightLogo light red, with or without reading
CauseThe scanner is in an access control mode, the USB or serial communication is abnormal, or there is a hardware fault, for example the image sensor is not found.
Fix
- Red light and no reading at all: Access Control Mode 1 may be active. Scan Enter Setup, Mode 0 in chapter 8, section "Access Control Mode", and Exit Setup. If it does not react to these bar codes either, contact us.
- Unplug the USB end, wait a few seconds and connect the scanner to another USB port.
- If it stays red, scan Enter Setup and Enter the Self-Check State (chapter 6, "Self-check Function"). It tests its beeper, lights and internal functions and then sends the result to the PC, so open Notepad first. Send that result to us.
4. Some bar codes do not readNo beep for certain codes
CauseThe bar code type is switched off, the code is printed light on dark, or it is held outside the reading range.
Fix
- Aztec Code, ITF-14, ITF-6, Matrix 2 of 5, Micro PDF417, ISSN and all OCR types are off by default. Enable the type in chapter 9, for example Enable Aztec Code.
- White-on-black QR codes: scan Decode Both in section "QR Inverse".
- Interleaved 2 of 5 codes shorter than 6 digits are ignored by default. Change this in "Set Length Range for Interleaved 2 of 5".
- Mostly paper labels: try Normal Mode in chapter 8, "Scanning Preference". The default Screen Mode is meant for phone screens.
- Hold the code still over the window and turn phone brightness up. Newland's maximum distances, such as 27 cm for a 20 mil QR code, are measured at illumination brightness Level 2; the factory setting is Level 1. Scan Level 2 in chapter 8, "Illumination Brightness", for more range.
5. Beeps, but nothing appearsGreen light, no text
CauseNo text field has the focus, or the scanner is in USB CDC or HID POS mode, for example after using EasySet.
Fix
- Click into Notepad and scan again. If the data appears there, check your own program.
- Scan Enter Setup, USB HID Keyboard (chapter 7, "USB HID Keyboard") and Exit Setup.
6. Wrong charactersSwapped letters, symbols or case, missing characters
CauseThe scanner assumes a U.S. keyboard while the PC uses another layout, the Caps Lock setting inverts case, or the PC drops fast keystrokes.
Fix
- Set the keyboard country, or use Emulate ALT+Keypad ON for Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian PCs. Our FM3281 programming guide has the table for each market.
- Inverted case: scan Caps Lock OFF, Non-Japanese Keyboard and No Case Conversion in chapter 7.
- Characters missing at random: scan Fast Mode Off or a longer Polling Rate.
- Digits turn into cursor moves: scan Do Not Emulate Numeric Keypad 1, or switch Num Lock on.
7. Enter missing or wrongCursor stays put, or moves down twice
CauseThe terminating character is off, or it is set to CRLF, which types Enter plus a Down Arrow in keyboard mode.
Fix
- Scan Enter Setup, Set Terminating Character to CR (0x0D), Enable Terminating Character Suffix, Exit Setup.
- Still no Enter: also scan Enable All Prefixes/Suffixes (chapter 11, "Global Settings").
- Enter twice: your program may add its own. Scan Disable Terminating Character Suffix.
8. NFC card not readNo NFC reaction, or NFC light red
CauseNFC is off by default, the card type is not supported, or metal nearby interferes. A red NFC light means an NFC module fault.
Fix
- Scan Enter Setup, Enable NFC Function, Mode 0 under "NFC Mode", then Exit Setup.
- Hold the card flat on the window, within 30 mm. The NFC light turns cyan when a card is read.
- Keep metal and magnetic objects at least 5 cm away from the scanner.
- The same card is ignored for 5 seconds by default.
- Red NFC light: power cycle the scanner. If it stays red, contact us.
9. Reset to factory defaultsSettings unknown
CauseProgramming bar codes were scanned by accident, or nobody knows how the scanner was set up.
Fix
- Scan Enter Setup, then Restore All Factory Defaults (chapter 6, "Default Settings").
- Set up again what you need: keyboard country, Enter suffix and NFC.
Lights at a glance
| Light | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Logo light green | Good read |
| Logo light blue | Configuration or firmware update in progress |
| Logo light purple | All bar code types off, Read Barcode Off, failed update or configuration error |
| Logo light red | Unauthorized, communication fault (USB, serial, device) or hardware fault (sensor, CPU voltage, other chip) |
| NFC light blue | NFC is working |
| NFC light cyan | NFC card read |
| NFC light red | NFC module fault |
Newland documents a power-on beep and a good read beep, both on by default, but no further beep codes. Access control modes 1 and 4 (chapter 8) keep the light red. Our FM3281 setup guide covers placement and the first test.
