What makes a healthcare printer different

Healthcare versions are not just a white housing. Three things set them apart:

• Disinfectant-ready plastics — the housing withstands repeated wipe-downs with the alcohol, bleach and quaternary compounds used on hospital wards, without cracking or clouding. A standard printer housing degrades within months under the same routine.
• Medical-grade power supply — required when equipment sits in patient care areas.
• UV-resistant white housing — stays white instead of yellowing under ward lighting and repeated cleaning.

Which printer for which job?

Resolution: 203 or 300 dpi

For healthcare, 300 dpi is usually the right choice. Wristbands and specimen tubes carry small text, patient IDs and 2D codes in a very small area, and 203 dpi struggles to keep those scannable. Use 203 dpi only for larger ward and asset labels where space isn't tight.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer

Most healthcare labelling uses direct thermal — wristbands, specimen labels and medication labels are short-lived and DT needs no ribbon to change on the ward. Choose thermal transfer where a label must survive long-term storage, freezing or chemical exposure, such as biobank samples or archived specimens.
