Zebra ZD220 / ZD230 status light: what red, amber and green mean
The ZD220 and ZD230 have no display, so the single STATUS light on top of the printer tells you what is wrong. Match its colour and flash pattern below, then open the fix.

Fixes
1. Printer openFlashing red STATUS light
CauseThe top cover is open or not fully latched.
Fix
- Lower the cover and press down on the front top corners until both latches snap shut.
- If printing doesn't continue, press FEED once.
- If the light keeps flashing red with the cover closed, contact us.
2. Media outFlashing red STATUS light
CauseThe roll has run out, a label is missing from the roll, or the printer cannot see the labels. Often the media sensor is in the wrong place or dirty.
Fix
- End of roll: open the printer, remove the empty core, load a new roll and close the cover. Same labels as before? Press FEED once to continue. A different size, brand or batch needs a calibration.
- Missing label in the middle of a roll: don't switch the printer off, or the print job is lost. Pull the labels forward until the next label is over the platen roller, close the cover, then press FEED once, and once or twice more to line up the labels.
- Labels loaded but not detected: check that the movable media sensor is in the default centre position for gap labels, or under the black mark for black-mark media. Then calibrate: hold FEED; the light flashes once, then twice. Release straight after the double flash.
- Still not detected? Clean the sensors and calibrate again.

3. Ribbon outFlashing red STATUS light, t models
CauseZebra ribbons have a silvery reflective strip at the end. When the printer sees it, it stops and reports a media alert.
Fix
- Open the printer and take the used ribbon off the take-up spindle.
- Move the empty core from the supply spindle up to the take-up spindle.
- Load a new ribbon roll, wider than your labels, and close the cover.
- Press FEED once to continue printing.
Full loading steps are in the ZD220/ZD230 setup guide.
4. Cut errorFlashing red STATUS light, cutter models
CauseThe cutter blade is blocked by labels, adhesive build-up or an object, and cannot move.
Fix
- Switch the printer off: hold POWER for about 5 seconds and wait until it has shut down completely.
- Switch it on again.
- If the error returns, contact us.
The cutter has no user-serviceable parts. Never remove its cover, never put fingers or tools into it, and don't clean it with swabs or solvents such as alcohol.
5. Printer pausedDouble flashing green STATUS light
CauseSomeone pressed FEED while the printer was printing. The printer finishes the current label and then pauses.
Fix
- Press FEED once. Waiting labels continue to print.
6. Printhead too hot or critical faultFlashing amber, or red-red-green
CauseFlashing amber: the printhead is too hot, usually after a long print job with a lot of print, or in a hot spot such as direct sunlight. Printing stops until it cools. Flashing red, red, green: a critical fault in the printhead or motor.
Fix
- Flashing amber: wait. Printing resumes by itself once the printhead has cooled.
- If it happens often, move the printer out of the sun and away from heaters. The operating range is 5–41 °C.
- Red, red, green: switch the printer off and on once. If the pattern comes back, contact us for service.
7. Blank or faint labelsLabels feed, little or no print
CauseWithout ribbon: the labels are not direct thermal, or the roll is in upside down. With ribbon: the ribbon is missing or the driver is not set to Thermal Transfer. Faint print: darkness too low, a dirty printhead or platen roller, or a worn printhead.
Fix
- Scratch the label surface quickly with a fingernail. No dark mark means the labels need ribbon.
- Check that the printable side faces up towards the printhead.
- On t models, check the ribbon and set Printing mode to Thermal Transfer in the driver's Printing preferences.
- Raise the darkness in the driver or your label software, one step at a time.
- Clean the printhead and the platen roller as described in the Zebra user guide for thermal transfer or direct thermal models. Use only the power supply that came with the printer.
8. Skipped labels or wrong sizePrint starts in the wrong place
CauseThe media sensor is in the wrong position, the printer is not calibrated for these labels, the platen roller slips, or the label size in the driver doesn't match the roll.
Fix
- Check the sensor position for your label type and run a calibration.
- Set the exact label width and height in the driver: Printing preferences, Page Setup tab, Media Settings.
- Clean the platen roller if labels still drift.
Step-by-step help is in ZD220/ZD230 calibration.
9. Nothing printsSteady green, job sent from the PC
CauseWrong printer or port, wrong driver, or no network connection.
Fix
- Hold FEED until the light flashes once. If the configuration report prints, the printer works and the problem is on the computer side.
- Check that you print to the ZDesigner printer. If Windows shows an "Unspecified device", follow Install the ZDesigner driver on Windows 11.
- Ethernet (ZD230): both lights on the network socket off means no link. Check the cable, and compare the IP address on the network configuration report with the port in Windows.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Zebra ZD220 blinking red?
Flashing red is a media alert: the cover is open, the labels or ribbon have run out, or the printer cannot detect the labels. Close the cover, reload and calibrate if needed.
How do I unpause a ZD230?
Press FEED once. A double flashing green light means paused; it turns steady green when the printer is ready again.
How do I reset a ZD220 or ZD230 to factory defaults?
With the light steady green, hold FEED. The light flashes once, then twice, then three times; release straight after the group of three flashes. This resets your printer settings, so calibrate again afterwards.
What does an amber light mean on a ZD220?
Steady amber during start-up is normal. Flashing amber means the printhead is too hot; printing resumes once it has cooled.
