Zebra TC501 / TC701 troubleshooting: power, charging, scanning
Match the charging LED or symptom to the cause and fix it: power, charging, worn batteries, scanning, battery drain, Wi-Fi or 5G, gloves and a frozen screen.
In this guide
Most TC501 and TC701 problems come down to the battery, the cradle, DataWedge or the network. Fixes apply to both models unless marked TC701. Check the Charging LED first.

Fixes
1. Device won't turn onBlack screen after pressing Power
CauseAfter a battery is fitted, the device waits for the Power button. Otherwise the battery is empty or not seated, or the system has crashed. Two blinking LEDs mean the battery is too low to start.
Fix
- Press and hold Power.
- Take the battery out and refit it bottom edge first. Press until both latches click.
- Charge it. A slow amber blink means it is charging.
- Still nothing: try a charged spare battery, then see Fix 8. After a slow hot swap, hold Power for six seconds.
2. Battery won't chargeLED off, or fast red blinking
CauseThe cradle or cable has no power, or the device is not seated firmly. Fast red blinking is a charging error, for example a temperature outside the range or a charge that has run for about 12 hours.
Fix
- Check the power cable at the cradle or adaptor and at the wall outlet.
- Reseat the device firmly.
- TC501 with rugged boot: use a rugged cradle (part numbers ending in
-B). - Older TC5 and TC7 cradles need Zebra's replacement cups or shims for these models.
- Let a cold or hot device reach room temperature. Zebra says the battery does not charge below 5 °C or above 40 °C.
- Test another battery to rule out a faulty one.
3. Charging LED is redSolid red or fast red blinking
CauseZebra uses red for a battery at the end of its useful life. Fast red blinking adds a charging error.
Fix
- Open the Battery Manager app from the app list. Zebra's guides say the wear bar turns yellow above 80 % wear, and the health shows Decommission when the battery should be replaced.
- Replace the battery. Both models take the 5,000 mAh standard battery (
BTRY-TC5A7A-SC-01) and the 7,240 mAh extended battery (BTRY-TC5A7A-EC-01).
4. Scanner does not scanNo aimer, or no data in the app
CauseDataWedge or your app's profile is off, the barcode type is disabled, the window is dirty, or the battery is low (the scanner stops before the low-battery warning).
Fix
- Wipe the scan window and charge the battery.
- Test in the DWDemo app. If it scans there, the hardware works and your app's profile is the problem.
- Open DataWedge, tap the menu, then Settings, and check that DataWedge is enabled.
- Open the profile linked to your app, or Profile0 if your app has none, and check that the profile, Barcode input and Keystroke output are enabled.
- Check that your barcode type is ticked under Configure scanner settings › Decoders.
- Change the distance and tilt the device slightly to avoid reflections.
A Scan button does not wake a sleeping device by default. To change that, tick the scan buttons under Settings › Wake-Up Sources. The full profile setup is in the DataWedge setup guide.
5. Battery drains fastEmpty before the end of a shift
CauseScreen settings, unused radios and apps that keep the device awake.
Fix
- Keep a short screen timeout under Settings › Display › Screen timeout (default 30 seconds), lower the brightness and switch off unused radios.
- Open Settings › Battery to see which apps use the most power, and stop the ones you don't need.
- Check battery wear in Battery Manager (Fix 3).
The device warns at 18 % and 10 % and turns off at 4 %. For long shifts, use the 7,240 mAh battery or hot-swap a charged spare.
6. Wi-Fi or mobile data dropsData not sent, or no network icon
CauseWi-Fi off, airplane mode on, out of range or wrong saved settings. TC701: poor coverage, SIM, APN or data plan.
Fix
- Check that airplane mode is off and Wi-Fi is on, and move closer to an access point.
- Open Settings › Network & internet › Internet, turn Wi-Fi off, touch Saved networks, select the network and touch Forget. Turn Wi-Fi on and connect again.
- If your EMM (MDM) adds enterprise Wi-Fi with PEAP, TLS or TTLS, Zebra's Android 15 release notes say the profile must include the CA certificate and the domain, or the network is not added. Ask IT to check both.
- TC701: move to better coverage, switch off and refit the SIM, and ask the operator to confirm the data plan and the APN.
7. Touchscreen and glovesScreen ignores taps
CauseThe touch panel mode does not match how the screen is used.
Fix
- Open Settings › Display › Touch panel mode.
- Gloves: choose Glove and Finger. Zebra mentions medical latex, leather, cotton and wool gloves.
- Stylus: choose Stylus and Finger. A Zebra-certified stylus works best.
- Pick the Screen Protector ON version of the mode if a screen protector is fitted, otherwise OFF. Bare fingers only: choose Finger Only.
- Wipe water off the screen.
8. Device freezesButtons and icons don't respond
CauseAn app or the system has stopped responding.
Fix
- Soft reset: press and hold Power until the menu appears, then touch Restart.
- If the screen does not react, do a hard reset: press Power, the left Scan button and Volume Up together for at least four seconds. Release them when the screen turns off. The device restarts. Source: Zebra's TC501 and TC701 reference guides. Zebra warns that a hard reset with a microSD card fitted can damage the card or corrupt its data.
- If it keeps freezing, install the latest LifeGuard update.
Enterprise and factory resets erase data. On both models, Zebra places the Enterprise Reset under Settings › System › Reset options › Erase all data (factory reset). Read the Zebra Android reset guide before you use it.

Frequently asked questions
What does a blinking amber light on the Zebra TC501 mean?
A slow amber blink, once every 4 seconds, means the battery is charging. When charging is complete, the LED turns solid green.
Why is the charging light on my TC701 blinking red?
Fast red blinking is a charging error, usually a temperature outside 5–40 °C or a charge that has run for about 12 hours. Zebra also uses red for a battery at the end of its life, so check it in Battery Manager.
How do I hard reset a frozen TC501 or TC701?
Press Power, the left Scan button and Volume Up together for at least four seconds, then release them when the screen turns off. If only an app hangs, hold Power and touch Restart instead.
Why does my TC501 scan in DWDemo but not in my app?
DWDemo uses its own DataWedge profile. Your app uses Profile0 or a profile linked to it, which may be disabled or not set to Keystroke output.
