Calibrate a TSC MH241T or MH341T label printer

Run auto or manual sensor calibration on the touch display or in TSC Console, choose gap, black mark or continuous, and fine-tune label size and position.

    The MH241T and MH341T find the start of each label with a media sensor. Calibration measures your labels so that every print starts in the same place and the printer stops at the right point. You run it on the touch display or from TSC Console on a PC.

    You'll need
    • The labels you want to print, loaded in the printer
    • A few spare labels: calibration feeds some through
    • The exact label size, including the gap, for manual calibration

    When to calibrate

    • When you set up the printer for the first time.
    • Whenever you change to labels of a different size or type. TSC recommends calibrating before printing on new media.
    • After you initialise the printer (reset it to defaults).
    • When the display shows "No Paper" or "Paper Jam" although labels are loaded, or when labels skip.

    Which sensor type to choose

    1 Labels on a liner with gaps: choose Gap · 2 Media with black marks on the back: choose Black Mark · 3 Media without gaps or marks: choose Continuous. The arrows show what the sensor detects.

    The black-mark sensor can read marks from below or from above. It reads the back of the media by default. If your marks are printed on the top side, change Menu › Sensor › BMark Transmitter before you calibrate.

    Load the labels and check the sensor

    Calibration only works when the labels pass through the media sensor. Open the media cover and check that the labels run through the damper, the media sensor and the front label guide, and that the guide touches the label edge. The sensor position can be adjusted. Make sure the sensor sits where the gaps or marks pass, then close the print head and the cover. Loading steps are in the MH241T/MH341T setup guide.

    Run auto calibration on the display

    1. Tap Menu on the main screen and open Menu › Sensor › Auto Calibration.
    2. Choose the sensor type: Gap, Black Mark or Continuous.
    3. The printer feeds labels and measures them.
    4. Press the feed button and check that exactly one label comes out.

    The calibration icon on the main screen is a shortcut to the same function.

    Note

    Auto calibration searches up to the length set under Menu › Sensor › Maximum Length, which is 254 mm by default. For longer labels, raise this value before you calibrate.

    Use manual calibration if auto calibration fails

    If auto calibration doesn't find the labels, enter the sizes yourself.

    1. Open Menu › Sensor › Manual Calibration.
    2. Choose the type: Gap, Black Mark or Continuous.
    3. Enter the paper length (label length) and the size of the gap or black mark.
    4. Confirm and feed a label to check the stop position.

    Measure the label length and the gap (or black mark) with a ruler, and enter them as separate values.

    Calibrate from TSC Console instead

    If the printer is out of reach, or you manage several printers, use TSC Console on a Windows PC connected by USB, serial or network. Select the printer and open Functions › Printer Configuration › Calibration, then choose the media type. Download TSC Console from the TSC Console page; the user manual explains the screens.

    Check the result and fine-tune

    Print a configuration label with Menu › Diagnostic › Print Config. to check that the printer stops correctly. Menu › Diagnostic › Sensor shows what the sensor reads, which helps when calibration keeps failing.

    When labels feed correctly but the print is in the wrong place:

    • Label size: set the exact width and height of your labels in the Windows driver or label software. TSC names a wrong label size as a cause of jams, skipped labels and print that is cut off at the side.
    • Print position: move the print with Menu › Setting › TSPL › Shift X (sideways) and Shift Y (along the label).
    • Stop position: change where the label stops for tearing or cutting with Offset in the same menu.

    These values are in dots. The MH241T has 8 dots per mm (203 dpi) and the MH341T 12 dots per mm (300 dpi), so 1 mm is 8 or 12 dots. Settings sent by your label software override the display values.

    Frequently asked questions

    How do I calibrate a TSC MH241T?

    Open Menu › Sensor › Auto Calibration on the touch display and choose Gap, Black Mark or Continuous to match your labels. The printer feeds a few labels and measures them.

    Why does the printer still skip labels after calibration?

    Check that the label size in your software matches the labels, that the sensor sits where the gaps or marks pass, and that the sensor is free of dust. If auto calibration keeps failing, use manual calibration.

    Do I need to calibrate after changing the ribbon?

    No. Calibration is for the labels. Calibrate when you load a different label type or size.

    Can I calibrate without a PC?

    Yes. Calibration runs from the touch display under Menu › Sensor. TSC Console is an alternative, not a requirement.
