Newland BS80 programming: keyboard, Enter, batch, reset

Set the BS80 keyboard country for Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Finnish, Polish or Czech PCs, add Enter or Tab, store scans offline and reset it.

In this guide

This guide covers the BS80 settings most people change: the keyboard layout, Enter or Tab after each scan, batch mode for stock counts and the reset to factory defaults. Bar code names are quoted as they appear in the BS80 Piranha II 2D User Guide; the 1D User Guide uses the same chapters for the NLS-BS8080-1D.

    How programming works

The scanner ignores programming bar codes until you scan Enter Setup. Each page of the user guide shows Enter Setup and Exit Setup.

    1. Switch the scanner on and connect it as described in the BS80 setup guide.
    2. Scan Enter Setup.
    3. Scan one or more setting bar codes.
    4. Scan Exit Setup.

Settings that need a value use the digit bar codes from the appendix section "Digit Barcodes" and Save from "Save/Cancel Barcodes". Newland's Windows tool EasySet, linked on the BS80 product page, is an alternative for viewing and changing settings.

Check the layout on your device

As a keyboard, the BS80 assumes a U.S. English layout. If the PC uses another layout, some characters change, for example - or /, or letters swap. In Windows 11, open Settings › Time & language › Language & region or select the input language icon on the taskbar to see the active layout. The Windows defaults for our markets are Estonian, Latvian (Standard), Lithuanian, Finnish, Polish (Programmers) and Czech.

On phones and tablets, Newland's advice is to set the device keyboard language to English (US). This is the easiest fix there.

    Set the keyboard country

    1. Open chapter 4, section "USB Country Keyboard Types".
    2. Scan Enter Setup, then the entry from the table below, then Exit Setup.
    3. Open Notepad, scan a barcode with letters, digits and symbols, and compare the result with the text printed under it.
Market Windows default layout Newland entry to scan
Estonia Estonian No Estonian entry: use Emulate ALT+Keypad (next step)
Latvia Latvian (Standard) No Latvian entry: use Emulate ALT+Keypad
Lithuania Lithuanian No Lithuanian entry: use Emulate ALT+Keypad
    Finland Finnish Finland (Swedish)
    Poland Polish (Programmers) Poland
    Czechia Czech Czechoslovakia
Any US U.S. (English), the default

Newland does not say which Windows layout its Poland, Czechoslovakia and Finland (Swedish) entries match, so the test in step 3 matters. The settings sit in the USB chapter, but Newland states that all USB HID Keyboard features also apply to Bluetooth HID.

    Tip

Characters that do not exist on the selected keyboard are skipped. Scan Beep on Unknown Character (section "Beep on Unknown Character") while testing, so you hear when this happens.

If your layout is missing: Emulate ALT+Keypad

With this setting the scanner sends every character as a numeric keypad code and ignores the keyboard country. Windows then produces the right character whatever the layout. It is slower, because each character takes several key presses.

    1. Scan Enter Setup.
    2. In chapter 4, section "Emulate ALT+Keypad", scan Emulate ALT+Keypad ON.
    3. Section "Code Page": if your barcodes contain national letters, scan the code page they were created with, for example Code Page 1257 (Baltic) or Code Page 1250 (Central and East European Latin). The default is Code Page 1252 (West European Latin).
    4. Section "Unicode Encoding": Newland recommends Off (the default) for Notepad and Excel and On for Microsoft Word.
    5. Scan Exit Setup and test in the program you use.

Add Enter or Tab after each scan

The key sent after the data is the terminating character, in chapter 8, section "Terminating Character Suffix". Newland's factory defaults list it as enabled with CR (Enter), while Disable All Prefixes/Suffixes is also a default, so test first: scan a barcode into Notepad. If the cursor jumps to a new line, Enter is already being sent.

    • Enter: scan Enter Setup, Set Terminating Character to CR (0x0D), Enable Terminating Character Suffix, Exit Setup.
    • Tab: scan Enter Setup, Set Terminating Character Suffix, the digits 0 and 9 from "Digit Barcodes", Save, Enable Terminating Character Suffix, Exit Setup. 09 is the hexadecimal code for Tab.

Prefer CR to CRLF in keyboard mode: Newland's key mapping table sends LF as a Down Arrow press. If Enter is still missing, scan Enter Setup, Enable All Prefixes/Suffixes (chapter 8, "Global Settings") and Exit Setup. Prefixes you have not switched on individually stay off.

Set up batch mode for stock counts

In chapter 5, section "Batch Mode", scan Enter Setup, one of the options below, then Exit Setup.

    Option What happens
Off (default) Each scan is sent at once. Scans made without a connection are lost.
Automatic Batch Mode Scans are sent at once when connected. Out of range, they are stored and sent automatically when the connection returns.
Manual Batch Mode Every scan is stored, in range or not. You send them when you are ready.

In Manual Batch Mode, place the cursor in the target field or spreadsheet cell, then hold Function for 3 seconds or scan Transmit Stored Data. The setting "Auto Clear Stored Data after Transmission" decides whether the memory is emptied after sending (default Off, so the data stays). Query the Number of Stored Barcodes and Clear All Stored Data are in the section "Query/Clear Stored Data in Flash".

    Important

Stored scans are easy to delete by accident. A short press on Delete/Reset followed by a scan deletes that code from memory. Holding Scan/Power and Delete/Reset together for 3 seconds can delete all stored scans under certain transmission settings, and Clear All Stored Data always empties the memory. Send your scans first.

To remove a wrong code from memory on purpose, press Delete/Reset and then scan that barcode again. If you need the time of each scan, chapter 3 has Enable Time Stamp; set the scanner clock first with Newland's BS80 Date&Time Setting Tool, which is a download on the BS80 Piranha II 2D product page.

    Adjust power-off, beep and vibration

    • Auto power-off: chapter 5, section "Auto Power-Off Timeout". Choose 5, 10, 20, 30 (default) or 60 minutes, or disable it.
    • Beep: chapter 3, section "Good Read Beep", has On and Off, plus volume, duration and frequency.
    • Vibration: chapter 3, section "Vibration". It is off by default; switch it on for noisy places.

    Restore factory defaults

    1. Open chapter 3, section "Default Settings".
    2. Scan Enter Setup, then Restore All Factory Defaults, then Exit Setup.
    3. Set the keyboard country, suffix and batch mode again if you use them. If the scanner no longer connects, remove BS80XXXX from the device's Bluetooth list and pair again.

Setting up several scanners the same way? Scan Save as Custom Defaults after configuring one. Restore All Custom Defaults then returns to your settings, and a factory reset does not delete them. If something goes wrong, see BS80 troubleshooting or all guides on the BS80 guides page.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the Newland BS80 support an Estonian keyboard?

No. Its keyboard list has no Estonian, Latvian or Lithuanian entry. Use Emulate ALT+Keypad ON on a Windows PC, or set the device keyboard to English (US).

How do I make the BS80 store barcodes offline?

Scan Enter Setup, Manual Batch Mode or Automatic Batch Mode from chapter 5, and Exit Setup. Send stored scans by holding the Function button for 3 seconds.

Why are my programming bar codes ignored?

Programming is off until you scan Enter Setup. Scan it first, then the setting, then Exit Setup.

How do I reset the BS80 to factory settings?

Scan Enter Setup and Restore All Factory Defaults from chapter 3, section "Default Settings", of the user guide.
