Honeywell PC42E-T and PC42E-D setup guide

Load labels and (on the PC42E-T) ribbon, calibrate with the print button, install Honeywell InterDriver and connect by USB or Ethernet.

    This guide takes a Honeywell PC42E-T or PC42E-D from the box to the first printed label. Both are 4-inch desktop printers with USB and Ethernet as standard. The PC42E-T prints with a ribbon (thermal transfer) or without one (direct thermal). The PC42E-D is a newer direct thermal model with a larger control panel and never uses a ribbon.

    You'll need
    • Labels 25.4–114 mm wide on a roll up to 127 mm in diameter, with a 25.4 mm (1 in) or 38.1 mm (1.5 in) core. The PC42E-D also takes 12.7 mm (0.5 in) cores.
    • PC42E-T with thermal transfer labels: a coated-side-out (ink-out) ribbon 25.4–110 mm wide on a 0.5 in or 1 in core
    • A Windows PC with administrator rights
    • The USB cable from the box, and a network cable if you print over Ethernet
    • A mains power cord for the power supply if your box doesn't contain one. Honeywell sells some versions without a cord.

    Before you start

    Check the box

    Check for the printer, the USB cable and the power supply. Honeywell's PC42E-D data sheet also lists a quick start guide and a compliance insert. Whether a power cord is included depends on the version. Labels and ribbon are not included.

    Know the controls

    • PC42E-T: one Print button, one ECO button and one Status LED.
    • PC42E-D: a control panel with the Print/Feed, ECO, Pause and Cancel buttons, the Status LED, and the Supplies, Pause and Network indicators.

    At the back of both printers are the power switch, the power port, a USB device port (to the PC), a USB host port (for a USB stick, keyboard or scanner), the Ethernet port and the external media feed slot. The PC42E-D also has a serial port. The PC42E-T can use serial with Honeywell's USB-to-serial cable.

    Our versions

    Decoded from Honeywell's configuration guide: the PC42E-T we sell (PC42E-TB02300) is the black 300 dpi version with USB and Ethernet. The PC42E-D we sell (PC42EDW020200) is the white 203 dpi version with USB, Ethernet and serial. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are an optional module for both and are not built in.

    Load the labels

    These steps follow the PC42E-T user guide. The PC42E-D uses the same parts (media holder with locking tab, media sensor with three positions, platen roller and tear bar); its quick start guide shows the loading steps in pictures.

    1. Press in the cover latches on both sides and open the cover completely, so that it can't fall shut.
    2. Pull up the lock on the left media hub and slide the hubs apart.
    3. Place the roll between the hubs, push the hubs against the roll and press the locking tab down. The printable side must face the printhead.
    4. Press in both locking buttons to open the print and ribbon mechanism.
    5. Slide the tab in the middle of the media sensor to your media type: black mark, gap, or cloth tag and other media.
    6. Feed the labels under the print and ribbon mechanism and out of the front. Adjust the media holders to the label width so the labels lie flat.
    7. If you print thermal transfer labels on the PC42E-T, load the ribbon now (next step). Otherwise lower the print and ribbon mechanism and press down until both locking tabs click, then close the cover.
    Tip

    Not sure whether your labels are direct thermal? Run a fingernail firmly across the printable side. A black mark means direct thermal, which prints without a ribbon. Labels that stay clean need a ribbon and only work in the PC42E-T.

    Fanfold labels enter through the external media feed slot at the back; then set the media holders and the sensor as above.

    Load the ribbon (PC42E-T only)

    Use a ribbon only with thermal transfer labels. The PC42E-T takes ink-out ribbons only: the inked, dull side faces outwards on the roll.

    1. Set the ribbon core switch for your ribbon. For a 0.5 in core, hold the ribbon turnplate, push the switch in with a Phillips screwdriver and turn it counter-clockwise, so the switch sits outwards. For a 1 in core, or when you use a ribbon adapter, push it in and turn it clockwise, so it sits inwards.
    2. Open the print and ribbon mechanism with the two locking buttons and lower the ribbon cover.
    3. For a 1 in core, push a ribbon adapter into the ribbon roll. With narrow labels, centre the core on the adapter.
    4. Place the ribbon roll between the rear ribbon holders, so that the inked side faces down towards the labels where the ribbon passes the printhead.
    5. Put an empty take-up core on a ribbon adapter. Pull the ribbon over the printhead and fix its end to the take-up core, with tape if needed.
    6. Fit the take-up core, turn the turnplate until it clicks, and wind off any slack so the ribbon is smooth.
    7. Lower the print and ribbon mechanism and press down until it locks. Close the cover.

    Connect power and switch on

    1. Make sure the power switch at the back is off.
    2. Connect the power supply to the power port at the back, then plug the power cord into the wall outlet. The green LED on the power supply lights up.
    3. Switch the printer on. The Status LED turns solid green when the printer is ready; on the PC42E-T it blinks green while starting up.

    Use only the power supply that came with the printer. Honeywell states that another adapter can damage the printer and void the warranty.

    Calibrate and print a test label

    The printer has to measure your labels before it prints. With the printer ready (Status LED solid green), press and hold Print (PC42E-D: Print/Feed) for about 6 seconds. The printer feeds several labels to calibrate the media sensor (Honeywell calls this a testfeed) and then prints a configuration label. The configuration label shows the printer settings and, on a network, the IP address.

    The ECO button chooses how calibration works. When it lights green, calibration is fast and uses as few labels as possible. When it is off, calibration is slower and feeds several labels; use this if the printer has trouble finding the gaps or marks. Details are in the PC42E calibration guide.

    Note

    If you hold the button while you switch the printer on, it calibrates, prints a configuration label and then prints one sample label for each printer language, two seconds apart. Pressing the button again selects the language on the label that is printing. Leave the default, Autosense, unless your software needs a fixed language.

    Install the Windows driver

    Honeywell's Windows driver is called InterDriver. Windows may detect the printer on its own, but Honeywell still asks you to install InterDriver.

    1. Open the Honeywell Technical Support Downloads portal at honeywell.com/PSSsoftware-downloads and sign in with a Honeywell account.
    2. Download and install the Honeywell Software Download Manager.
    3. In the list, open Software › Printers › Printer Software and Drivers › Printer Drivers › Windows Printer Drivers and download the driver with the Download Manager.
    4. Extract the files to a folder and run the .exe file to install InterDriver.
    5. Connect the USB cable to the USB device port of the printer, and to the PC when the installer asks for it.
    6. Print a Windows test page.

    Set the labels in your software

    Set the label width and height to match the loaded labels in the driver's printing preferences and in your label software. On the PC42E-T, also choose the print method: thermal transfer with a ribbon, or direct thermal without one. Honeywell's factory default is thermal transfer with media with gaps. You can also change these settings on the printer web page under Configure › Printing › Media.

    Connect to the network

    The PC42E-D quick start guide doesn't cover network setup, so these steps follow the PC42E-T user guide. The printer uses DHCP by default and gets an IP address from your network automatically.

    1. Switch the printer off, connect the network cable to the Ethernet port and switch the printer on.
    2. Print a configuration label (hold the print button for about 6 seconds). Finding an address can take about 10 seconds; if the label shows 0.0.0.0, wait 10 seconds and print another.
    3. Enter the IP address in a web browser to open the printer web page. Click Login and enter the user name and password. The default login is printed in Honeywell's PC42E-T user guide; ask us if you don't have it. Change the password if others can reach the printer on your network.
    4. For a fixed IP address, go to Configure › Communications › Ethernet, enter the IPv4 settings and click Save.
    5. When you add the printer in InterDriver for network printing, use this IP address.

    Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work only with the optional Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module. Once it is fitted, set it up on the web page under Configure › Communications › Wireless 802.11 or with Honeywell's PrintSet configuration tool. For the PC42E-D, Honeywell lists PrintSet 6 and the web interface as management tools.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does the Honeywell PC42E-T need a ribbon?

    Only for thermal transfer labels. With direct thermal labels it prints without a ribbon; set the print method to direct thermal in your software or on the printer web page.

    Can the PC42E-D use a ribbon?

    No. The PC42E-D is direct thermal only and prints on heat-sensitive labels.

    Which Windows driver do I need for the PC42E-T or PC42E-D?

    Honeywell's InterDriver, from the Honeywell Technical Support Downloads portal (honeywell.com/PSSsoftware-downloads).

    Does the PC42E-T or PC42E-D have Wi-Fi?

    Not built in. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth need Honeywell's optional Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module. Both have Ethernet as standard.
