Datalogic Gryphon 4200 programming: keyboard, suffix, reset

Set the keyboard country for Baltic, Finnish, Polish and Czech layouts, choose Enter or Tab after each scan, and reset the Gryphon 4200 to factory settings.

Three settings matter most on a new Gryphon GD4200 or GBT4200: the keyboard country, the key sent after each barcode and, when things go wrong, the factory reset. All three are set by scanning barcodes from Datalogic's Product Reference Guide, or from a PC with Aladdin.

    You'll need
    • The scanner connected by USB, or the GBT4200 linked to its base
    • The Gryphon I GD/GBT/GM4200 Product Reference Guide (PRG), printed or on a second screen, from the Downloads section of Datalogic's Gryphon 4200 support page
    • Notepad or another text editor for testing

    How barcode programming works

Most settings take three scans: ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE, the setting, and ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE again. The first scan gives four low beeps and the scanner stays in programming mode until the last scan saves the change. Three low beeps mean a barcode was rejected. Cover the other barcodes on the page so the scanner reads only the one you want.

A few barcodes work with a single scan and without ENTER/EXIT, for example the interface and reset barcodes. Page numbers below are the ones printed in the PRG.

    Set the keyboard country

In keyboard mode the scanner sends key positions, by default for a US keyboard (Country Mode = U.S. Keyboard). If Windows uses a different layout, letters, digits or symbols come out wrong: on a Czech keyboard, for example, digits can turn into accented letters. Set the scanner's Country Mode to the layout that is active in Windows. The barcodes are under Setting Country Mode in the PRG's Keyboard Interface chapter (pp. 49–62).

Windows layout Country Mode in the PRG
    Estonian Estonian (p. 55)
    Finnish Finnish (p. 55)
Latvian (Standard), the Windows default for Latvian No entry with this name. Letters, digits and most symbols sit on the same keys as in the US layout, so test with the default U.S. Keyboard first. If ' or " come out wrong, use ALT mode.
Latvian (QWERTY) Latvian QWERTY (p. 58)
    Latvian Latvian (p. 58)
    Lithuanian Lithuanian (p. 51)
    Lithuanian IBM Lithuanian_IBM (p. 58)
Lithuanian Standard No entry with this name. Use ALT mode.
Polish (Programmers), the usual layout in Poland Polish Programmer (p. 59)
    Polish (214) Polish_214 (p. 51)
    Czech Czech (p. 51)
Czech (QWERTY) Czech QWERTY (p. 54)
Czech Programmers Czech Programmers (p. 54)
    1. Scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE, printed at the top of each Country Mode page.
    2. Scan the barcode for your layout, for example Estonian.
    3. Scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE again to save.
    4. Scan a barcode with letters, digits and symbols into Notepad and compare.
    Check

The short Country Mode list in the Gryphon Quick Reference Guides has 21 entries and no Estonian, Latvian or Finnish. Use the full list in the PRG.

Fallback: ALT mode or the US layout

If no Country Mode matches, scan Select USB Alternative Keyboard from "Configuring the Interface" (one scan, no ENTER/EXIT). The scanner then types characters as Alt codes on the numeric keypad, and the Country Mode no longer applies. If some characters are still wrong, the PRG's ALT Output Type setting (p. 70) chooses the kind of Alt code. To go back, scan Select USB Standard Keyboard.

No scanner change at all: add the US keyboard in Windows 11 under Settings › Time & language › Language & region and switch to it with Win + Space before scanning. People forget to switch back, so a scanner setting is safer for daily work.

    GBT4200 paired directly over Bluetooth

The PRG's Bluetooth HID Features section asks you to set the keyboard settings, including Country Mode, before you connect the scanner to a Bluetooth HID host. Set them first, then pair. If characters are still wrong, the same section has HID Alt Mode = ON, which lets the scanner send labels correctly whatever Country Mode is selected.

Choose Enter or Tab after each scan

Out of the box the scanner sends Enter after every barcode: the global suffix is 0x0D, a carriage return. Many forms work better with a Tab, which moves to the next field. The suffix is set in Global Prefix/Suffix (p. 81) with Set Global Suffix. You enter each character as a two-digit hex code from the PRG's Keypad appendix: 09 for Tab, 0D for Enter. Up to 20 characters are allowed.

    1. Scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE.
    2. Scan Set Global Suffix.
    3. From the Keypad appendix, scan 0 and then 9.
    4. Scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE to end the entry. The PRG asks for this whenever you enter fewer than 20 characters.
    5. Scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE once more to save and leave programming mode.
    6. Test in Notepad: the cursor should move as if you pressed Tab.

Made a mistake before the last character? Scan CANCEL and start again. For Tab and Enter together, enter 0 9 0 D in one go: the PRG asks for the characters in the order they should be sent. To bring back Enter, repeat the steps with 0 D. A prefix in front of the barcode works the same way with Set Global Prefix.

To send no key at all after the barcode, clear the global suffix in Aladdin. The PRG has no barcode for an empty suffix.

    Reset to factory defaults

When settings are in a mess, start again from a known state. The PRG section "Resetting the Product Configuration to Defaults" (pp. 29–30) has two options, each a single scan:

    • Restore Custom Default Configuration brings back the custom defaults saved for the interface in use. Select the right interface first.
    • Restore USA Factory Configuration or Restore EU Factory Configuration return all settings to factory values, including the interface. The two differ in the Label ID set. Label IDs are switched off by default, so the choice rarely matters.

The Quick Reference Guides print one Reset Default Settings barcode instead. After a factory reset, the scanner is back to U.S. Keyboard and Enter after each scan, so set your Country Mode and suffix again.

    Or use Aladdin

Datalogic Aladdin is free from the Datalogic software downloads page. It shows the scanner's settings on a PC, including Country Mode and the suffix, and can save a configuration for several scanners. Use it to set an empty suffix.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the Gryphon 4200 support an Estonian keyboard?

Yes. The PRG lists the Country Mode Estonian. Scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE, Estonian, then ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE again.

Which Country Mode do I use for a Polish keyboard?

Polish Programmer for the Windows layout Polish (Programmers), which most PCs in Poland use, and Polish_214 for Polish (214).

How do I make the scanner send Tab instead of Enter?

Scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE, Set Global Suffix, 0 and 9 from the Keypad appendix, then ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE twice.

How do I reset a Datalogic Gryphon to factory settings?

Scan Restore EU Factory Configuration or Restore USA Factory Configuration from the PRG. Then set the interface, Country Mode and suffix again if you changed them.
